Liturgical Day of the Week

Changelog

TODO

  • Updates to reflect current year cycles (currently runs through December 31st, 2026)
  • Additional Denominations support (This is TECHNICALLY available now, but no one has asked for additional support beyond Catholic)
  • Non United States Diocese (and in their respective languages; same answer as above.)
  • Suggestions from you?

2.0.2

  • Released (February 27, 2026)
Fixed actual colors to fall more in line with what multiple sources have noted for HTML hex color codes. This focused on red, green, purple/violet, pink/rose only.

2.0.1

  • Released (October 19, 2025)
Improved Timezone and DST detection. Reorganized DST/TZ info on main plugin shortcode page.
I reverted back to using the colors directly from the USCCB’s Liturgical Calendar. Since the data used here is also used in my day job for the front desk welcome monitor in the lobby, I wanted to standardize everything properly. Source (and more) is now available inside this plugin’s includes folder inside the .xlsx file.
    I resequencecd the data for Year A (starting November 30th, 2025) through December 31st, 2026 (Year B).
I’m starting to streamline the files a bit more for better organization. Two separate shortcode files are now a single file. All separate function files combined into a single one.
Fixed a bug where the saint was being shown instead of the liturgical wording of the day.
Changed some of the defaults around, and noted which items are default configurations, so that it makes better sense.
I’ve also greatly enhanced plugin attributes to virtually eliminate any risk of SQL Injection or Cross Site Scripting (XSS) attacks via the shortcode options. Only specific values are now allowed, and will revert to core defaults if not definied properly.
Fixed the release date and notes for version 2.0.0, which I forgot last time. Also adding missing version information inside plugin release notes.

2.0.0

  • Released (March 9, 2025)
  • This is a major overhaul of the code, so version was increased accordingly
  • I had to come to realize that the liturgical wording and colors were not the same every year. Mea Culpa in not realizing that. This version will take us through the end of the liturgical year in November 2026 (we’ll be on Year A then).
  • With the “FILTER_SANITIZE_STRING” constant being depricated in PHP 8.x, I changed the behavior on this to modernize the code, while ensuring it’s properly sanitised and secured.
  • I’m now handling the color stuff as a separate function, and in JSON format, while capitalizing on more modern coding efficiencies. This reduces the risk of the wrong background color and text color being used.
  • This version now detects Daylight Savings Time automatically, though you can turn that feature off, if needed. See the shortcode builder for details on this.
  • This version also allows you to define the time zone you’re in.Just head to PHP’s List of Supported Timezones for the available list. The shortcode builder will guide you on how to change off the default “America/New_York” timezone.

1.0.5

  • Never released
  • Centralized the news under “More BD Plugins”, allowing me to edit a single file for all plugins going forward.

1.0.4

  • Released (November 23, 2023)
  • Emergency fixes to the timezone offset settings page (was not saving changes).
  • Feast / Memorial / Solemnity toggle wasn’t working correctly. Fixed!

1.0.3

  • Released (November 23, 2023)
  • Migrated the Timezone settings to the “Bearly Doug” page to centralize it.
  • Since the “Saint of the Day” plugin is being merged in with this, restructured LDotW to support that natively.
  • Added the ability to control what gets shown within the LDotW box (wording), and to control placement.
  • Improved the Demo box to visually show the new various toggles on the shortcode builder.
  • Added Year B (Nov 27, 2023 through Nov 30, 2024) colors and days.
  • Bumped Support to WordPress 6.4.1

1.0.2

  • Released (November 22nd, 2022)
  • Fixed errors where no color was defined for a specific day; defaults to a white background and “Liturgical color of the day: White” for wording.
  • Added Year A (Nov 27, 2022 through Nov 26, 2023) colors and days.
  • Bumped Support to WordPress 6.1.1

1.0.1

  • Released (September 17th, 2021)
  • Changed the timezone offset field name from “ldotwtzoffset” to “bdoffset”, since this timezone offset feature will be used on the “Liturgical Day of the Wekk” plugin, as well as the upcoming “Saint of the Day” and “Question of the Week” plugins.
  • Fixed the readme.txt file (several references to the RPU plugin changed to reference LDotW, instead).
  • Added “pink” and “rose” to the available lectionary colors.
  • Due to two identical functions in LDotW and SotD, I’ve renamed them both, in both plugins to make them specific for each plugin.
  • Coding optimization: Combined four separate functions into a single function to clean up code and make this plugin far more efficient. Reduced main plugin file size by almost 5KB.

1.0.0

  • Initial Plugin development and launch (Sept. 17th, 2021)
  • Special thank-you to Ed McN at Francis de Sales Catholic Church for the inspiration behind this!
